Wintry Swamp

No flurries, snow, or bitter chill.

No downy white on highest hill.

Just sticky coolness all around

While scattered raindrops still abound.

Tall drowned oak trees from the last flood

Rise nakedly out of the mud.

Cardinals, jays, and mockingbirds

Encourage with sing-songy words.

A flooded lake at wintertime

Is, in it's bleakness, quite sublime.
