Palm Branches Underfoot

They started off as branches,

All waving to the sky.

From the green tops of palm trees,

They praised the Lord on high!

Then they were plucked down by hand

And laid down on the street,

Gifted as a carpet path

Lest dust touch the Master's feet.

Days and moods shifted 'til

That which kept off the mud

From the feet of earth's savior

Collected from them blood.

At last a full week went by

From first being trod on.

The fronds were crisp and dry, but

The pow'r of death was gone!

A stone was removed from a grave.

Hope broke though like a knife.

Upon those branches walked scarred feet

Which overflowed with life!
