My child is retarded.

R: Reasonable. It takes more time to communicate; that doesn't mean he can't.

E: Empathetic. He loves and cares about his family and friends with all his heart.

T: Tough. He faces and overcomes hurtful stereotypes every day and never gives up.

A: Active. He has hobbies and interests just like you do.

R: Responsible. He has chores at home, work at school, and goals for his future. He has as much to look forward to as every other student.

D: Dedicated. Taking longer to achieve a milestone or master a skill doesn't deter him from seeing it through. He works hard for every success and takes pride in his hard work.

E: Expressive. He isn't afraid to laugh, cry, live, and learn. His heart is on his sleeve, and we all could learn from him.

D: Delightful. He is the light of my life and a joy to be around, and if you get to know him, you'll think so too!

"Retarded" doesn't mean stupid, inferior, or worthless. It is merely one way to describe a special person who walks through life instead of runs, who isn't afraid to share and to feel, and who will change your life in ways you never knew.
