A Wheel of Cheese for a Life of Grinding Corn

A lovely mountain maiden

In her gray calico skirt

Walked down to the water mill

On a thin path made of dirt.

Romance was far from her mind;

She had corn that needed ground.

She brought a wheel of goat cheese

She'd made herself by the pound.

The miller was quite handsome,

She observed with some surprise,

With wit of tongue and kindness

Shining from his light brown eyes.

He noticed her shocked silence

And her thorough perusal,

So he mistook her cheese wheel

For a marriage proposal!

He was used to the offers

From the other local girls,

But none matched the honest look

Beneath this maiden's tussled curls.

Thus the young mountain maiden

Who could scarcely say a thing,

Left without a bit of corn-

But on her left hand, a ring!

Just a short half-year later,

The two lived without a fight-

Making eyes and grinding corn

Ev'ry day... and ev'ry night!
