A Monument to Our Species

The ingenuity of man flourishes when he is struck with the pangs of hunger. Whether stricken with the hunger for food, praise, power, or even adventure, a man knows no greater creativity than when the claws of need delving into his belly press him forward until he has surpassed even his own expectations.

A farmer may lay a trap against the wolf who steals his flock; a mother may invent a game or a goal to raise her children into leaders, lords, or kings; a miller may even tame a whole river just to grind his corn into meal.

The ability of mankind to develop his or her surroundings into the workshop of the mind remains a persistent monument to the species even in the remotest places of the earth.
