A Man and His Cat

There was this kitten, you see,

As scrawny and thin as can be.

We think her owner had died,

And then she had run off to hide.

For weeks she wandered the street,

Bereft of even scraps of meat.

In desperation she meowed

For any care she'd be allowed.

A friendly old man found her

But sadly, he could not keep her.

He gave her to a neighbor

Who tried to find her safe harbor.

I was the neighbor he found.

I searched for a home all around.

But she was surely alone

And hardly more than skin and bone.

For days she'd just eat and nap,

Until she found my husband's lap.

He didn't want a kitten,

But she was solidly smitten.

Time passed; we thought she was ill.

We thought that she might need a pill.

The vet said no, not that.

It's simply an elderly cat.

Sixteen years old, new best friend.

She'll have his lap until the end.

Kimberlee Long, August 12, 2020 True story. She's an extraordinarily loving animal. She loves being on leashed adventures and very, very long naps. Her longest nap: 2 days, no waking. Then she got up and acted fine. Weird cat.
