She was wearing silk flowers when she stepped in the door.

She'd strung them all through her hair, little white blossoms galore.

A dazzling smile lit up her young face

As she pranced through the classroom and sat down in her place.

Some boys pointed fat fingers at her and started to laugh.

A couple of girls tittered that she was quite daft.

So the little girl who was wearing silk flowers

Puzzled over this thought for the next several hours.

Why shouldn't she smile and put flowers in her hair?

She was hurting nobody. Why should anyone care?

The next day she saw a lonely girl cry a single tear.

So the girl wearing silk flowers placed one behind the lonely girl's ear.

Together they found a boy whose name didn't make the team docket,

So they gave him a silk flower to put in his shirt pocket.

Scrubbing the hall floors they found the old janitor.

The three gave her a silk flower and remembered to thank her.

At lunch they rounded up more kids from the far table ends,

And that's how they became known as the silk flower friends.

Somewhere there's a school of kids with great friendship powers,

And it all started with a girl who was wearing silk flowers.
